Ethnic group (UK ONS census)
A self-identified ethnic group classification used by the UK Office for National Statistics in the 2021 Census of England and Wales. It sorts respondents into five high-level groups, each with named subgroups, primarily reflecting ethnic and national origin and heritage.
These are official administrative and statistical categories used for population monitoring, not biological or scientific classifications of human variation. (UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2021 Census of England and Wales)
Groups
- Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh — A UK census high-level group whose subgroups are Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Any other Asian background.
- Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African — A UK census high-level group whose subgroups are Caribbean, African, and Any other Black, Black British, or Caribbean background.
- Mixed or Multiple ethnic groups — A UK census high-level group for people identifying with more than one ethnic group, whose subgroups are White and Black Caribbean, White and Black African, White and Asian, and Any other Mixed or Multiple ethnic background.
- White — A UK census high-level group whose subgroups are English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British, Irish, Gypsy or Irish Traveller, Roma, and Any other White background.
- Other ethnic group — A UK census high-level group whose subgroups are Arab and Any other ethnic group.
