Eye colour

The natural colour of your eyes — a polygenic inherited trait. One of the most visible things you were born with.

An inherited physical trait, set by several genes that control pigment in the iris. (Genetics)

Groups

• Brown — The most common eye colour worldwide — lots of melanin.
• Blue — Little melanin in the iris, scattering light to look blue.
• Green — Relatively rare — a mix of low melanin and a golden tint.
• Hazel — A shifting blend of brown and green.
• Amber — A golden, coppery brown.
• Grey — A pale, silvery variation of blue.
• Heterochromia — Two different eye colours, or sections of different colour.
