The Western zodiac divides the ecliptic into twelve equal 30-degree signs of tropical astrology, each tied to a roughly month-long date range. Rooted in Babylonian astronomy and systematised by Hellenistic astrologers (notably Ptolemy, 2nd century CE), it sorts people by the sun's apparent position at birth into one of twelve sun signs, each carrying an element, a modality, and traditional personality associations.
