Relationship status

Relationship status is a standard demographic field used on social platforms, surveys, and official forms to describe a person's current romantic or marital situation. It draws on civil legal statuses (such as marriage and divorce) alongside informal self-described states, and sorts people by their present partnership arrangement.

This is a descriptive demographic and civil-status classification, not a scientific or psychological typology; categories vary by jurisdiction and personal interpretation. Groups

Single — Not currently in a committed romantic relationship.
In a relationship — Romantically involved with a partner without a formal legal status.
Engaged — Committed to marry, having accepted or made a proposal.
Married — Joined to a spouse through a legally or religiously recognised marriage.
In a civil partnership — Joined to a partner through a legally recognised civil partnership.
In a domestic partnership — Living together as committed partners under a recognised domestic partnership arrangement.
Separated — Married but living apart from a spouse, without a finalised divorce.
Divorced — Formerly married, with the marriage legally dissolved.
Widowed — Was married to a spouse who has since died.
It's complicated — In a situation that does not fit neatly into the other categories.
